- Are we getting into one of those "grey" areas concerning religion and
- its place in modern society? Do computers and the Bible have anything in
- common? Will we now have to publish something about the Koran or the works
- of Aleister Crowley?
-
- Hell if I know. I've always considered the computer to be one of the
- best tools for learning because it can present quizzes better than a human
- can. If a computer is programmed correctly it will never tell you the
- answer; when a human is giving you a quiz, all you have to do is bend one
- of his fingers back a ways and unless he's G. Gordon Liddy, he will
- probably spill his guts.
-
- David Presley, no relation to any King as far as I know, is a Bible fan
- and has come up with a pretty good quiz on the history, books and people of
- the Bible. I surprised myself by knowing a lot more about it than I
- thought I did, and you may, too. But it's not an easy quiz -- he has done
- extensive research to make it appropriate for all ages. There are some
- help screens in the program that explain what all is involved.
-
- I asked David to make it more "informational" than "preachy" and he
- seems to have done a very fine job. If I may offer an opinion about
- religion in the US, it's that evangelism, and not religion, is what worries
- people like me who are skeptical. I never get mad at believers until I'm
- stopped on the street, or have my doorbell rung, or read about censorship.
- Jeff Jones is a very religious person and he has never tried to push
- anything on me. Guess what? He's only made me curious, not mad. So
- because of the way David has presented BIBLE BASICS, I'm happy to put it on
- LOADSTAR, where I imagine quite a few readers will like it. End of
- opinion.
-
- However, in the interest of fairness, if anyone has a program (quiz or
- otherwise) about an equally controversial topic, send it to me. If it's
- done as well as David's program, we'll run it.
-
- Two little "quirks" appeared in the program when we tested it. In the
- section where you are given two books of the Bible and asked what comes
- between, David lists "Table of Contents" as appearing just before Genesis,
- and "Maps" as appearing just after Revelations. Your Bible may not be laid
- out the same way as David's. We definitely don't want to get into a
- controversy over which version of the Bible is best. Use your judgment and
- may we all be filled with slack.
